As a parent of young children, I love to see the magic of everyday through their eyes.
I happily choose to have an elf at Christmas because I think it’s fun.
I choose to help them write letters to Santa because it’s nice to think there is someone out there that is so kind he gives gifts to children in return for their kindness.
I choose to celebrate random holidays, like St. Patrick’s Day and the first day of Spring, because it adds to the routine of day to day life and creates fun memories for my kids.
I also love that we get to make up the rules. We didn’t have a leprechaun in our house because we are not Irish, but it was fun to make everything green for the day!
Childhood is short and real life is kinda boring. My hope that the little traditions in our house will stick out louder in our kids minds than my yelling, a messy house, extra weight, the many hours Tobin is at work, the fact that I HATE playing, and all the toys and clothes we didn’t buy, or the trips we didn’t go on.
Slowly the harshness of the world will creep into our children’s minds. But, until then we will have fun and choose to believe in magic. In not so many years all we will have are our memories of this time. I want to have as many fun and happy ones as we can make.
